Dirk Fleischmann's art projects relate to economic and ecological issues and
take place over many years. With The Invisible of the Visible exhibition and
the launch of my fashion industries at Front Row in Singapore, Fleischmann
presents a fashion label as an art project. He has designed and commissioned
the making of a limited edition Crescent Palm shirt, which is now on display
at Front Row. The shirt is tailored to the artist's body and in accordance
with his own preferences. Like with most of Fleischmann's projects, the
concept refers to his subjective biases, aversions and contradictions. In
addition, my fashion industries triggers issues of commodity fetishism by
redefining the oft-obscured relationship between labour and commodity.
The shirt is manufactured by CS Garment Inc., located inside the Cavite
Economic Zone in Rosario, Philippines. In April 2008, Fleischmann lived in
Rosario for a month and documented in 36 videos the production of the shirts
in the factory and the living conditions of the labourers. It is a portrait
of the workers, the factory and the urban situation in relation to the
largest free trade zone in the Philippines. Fleischmann uses his Crescent
Palm shirt as a link to give an idea of the production conditions of the
Cavite Economic Zone to a wider public. Questions of access and locality are
set off on different levels throughout the project. The shirt functioned for
the artist as an "entry ticket" into the free trade zone because unless one
is an employee within the restricted zone, one can only access this place as
an investor. The presence of the artist in the place of the shirt production
and the extensive video documentation could be understood as a strategy to
create a visual map of the city of Rosario with its economic zone. The
artist too is included in this map, albeit present only behind the camera.
